ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Thanks for posting this. It freaks me out how no one I talk to knows or cares about this. We're heading for a surveillance society and for the most people it's too surreal or abstract to be worried about it.

That's the scariest thing of all: that this thing can very well slip under the most radars, and affect people's lives in horrendous ways. It's not even about piracy, or being able to download something. If only it were that simple. But yes, it's awfully quite, and it needs to be blown wide open.

And thank you!

Thank you!
Yes, the more the words spreads, the more chance this thing has of being at least brought to people's radars. It's a scary proposition and not many are paying attention.

Exactly. It needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Most people think it's another one like SOPA or PIPA, which, bad in themselves, are nowhere near the scope or the danger of this one. It scares me in a very real way.

Not to change the subject or anything but are you going to do True Blood recaps again this year? I always appreciated your take on things in Bon Temps.
