The best of 2007? Meh...
- Dec. 14th, 2007 at 1:56 PM
Once again, I predict that whoever lobbied the so-called Hollywood Foreign Press Association the hardest will win. Which is why the Globes are never an accurate forecast of Oscar nominations. And, while I'm on the subject, be aware that the motley crew who belong to the scandal-riddled HFPA won't grant membership to the real international journalists who work for the prestige newspapers across the world. Which is why I, for one, refuse to hype the HFPA's b.s. every year and will never offer you an analysis of the nominations or wins. Trust me, they're as meaningless as the crappy organization that gives them out.
Not that it's news of any kind. All awards are meaningless and exactly for the same reason. It's who yells the loudest into someone's deaf ear at any given period.
And speaking of the season, it's the end of the year and all sorts of "Big in 2007" or "The Best Of" lists are coming out. This year, as far as pop culture and entertainment goes (with very few exceptions) was a wash. And I find myself caring not at all.
I think of that great Dr. Cox rant (which sadly loses the spark of John C. McGinley's wonderful delivery when put in print): "I suppose I could riff a list of things that I care as little about as our last week together. Lemme see, uhh... Low-carb diets. Michael Moore. The Republican National Convention. Kabbalah and all Kabbalah-related products. Hi-def TV, the Bush daughters, wireless hot spots, 'The O.C.', the U.N., recycling, getting Punk'd, Danny Gans, the Latin Grammys, the real Grammys. Jeff, that Wiggle who sleeps too darn much! The Yankees payroll, all the red states, all the blue states, every hybrid car, every talk show host! Everything on the planet, everything in the solar system, everything everything everything everything everything everything - ever - everything that exists - past, present and future, in all discovered and undiscovered dimensions. Oh! And Hugh Jackman."
So, in the spirit of Dr. Cox -- a true role model if there ever was one! -- here's my list of things deemed important or big this year that I either care little about or that annoy me to no end (in no order what so ever and very partial indeed):
1. The Spice Girls reunion.
2. The Deathly Hallows; gay Dumbledore; straight Dumbledore; the idea of Dumbledore having sex with anyone ever.
3. Dancing with the Stars; Marie Osmond; Donny Osmond; any Osmond.
4. High School Musical I, II and infinity.
5. Iggy the dog.
6. Whoever the hell Dannielynn's baby-daddy is (and I heartily resent the fact that I even know who Dannielynn is!).
7. Judd Apatow and the same damn movie he keeps making (with the same damn actors) under different titles, all about his interminable childhood.
8. Transformers.
9. McDreamy, McSteamy, McNipples and anything to do with Shonda Rhimes' McUnivers.
10. Heroes and their Origins.
11. The Golden Globes.
12. The Golden Compass.
13. Showtime as the new HBO.
14. The old HBO (except for Flight of the Conchords, they rock!).
15. Britney Spears; her hair; her underwear; her children; her custody problems; her dogs; her comebacks...
16. Sanjaya (and I heartily resent the fact that I even know who Sanjaya is!).
17. iPhone.
18. Vajayjay (if you are old enough to know what it is, let alone use it, you're old enough to call it by its correct name, little girl!).
19. That annoying web video of a drama-queen teenager weeping to leave Britney alone! Stop that! No one's THAT gay and no one cares about Britney THAT much! You've got a reality show out of it. Now, get the f***k away from my computer screen!
20. Karl Rove. He was called "Bush's Brain." If I were him, I wouldn't broadcast that distinction.
21. Rosie O'Donnell and The View. Rosie O'Donnell and Donald Trump. Rosie O'Donnell and anything.
22. Pretty much all TV ads and political campaigns...
... Oh! and Kristen Bell!
I could go on, but there isn't enough bandwidth. Happy Holidays! :)

On a note though, we were discussing the word "va-jay-jay" the other day, and someone mentioned that it might have been used because the word vagina (unlike penis) isn't allowed on TV, or at least TV before 10. Not sure if its true, but it is interesting.
Happy Holidays to you too!
Thank you for the wishes. :))
Who is Iggy the Dog?
I like that bit about the Golden Globes as well. They are pretty meaningless but I love watching them because so many stars show up to that one award show. You've got television and film, so it's twice the relationship, hair, make-up and fashion drama to snark about. I love it.

Things like Dannielynn's parentage and Sanjaya I'd completely forgotten about, but were heavily scrutinized earlier this year.
Sigh. I happily forgotten them, too, but they annoyingly popped up on all those lists that every magazine, website and public access show insists on putting out at the end of the year, so I was forced to remember. :))
Who is Iggy the Dog?
It's the pooch Ellen had an on-air meltdown about. Seriously, they showed it on CNN! She was hosting her show and she appeared weeping uncontrollably. I thought someone died. Turns out, it was a dog she adopted but couldn't keep for whatever reason. So she decided to give it away to some friend's daughter. But the agency she got the dog from initially came back and took it. Something to do with their protocol. Anyway, the dog was fine, the girl was fine, everything was fine. Just Ellen -- who, prior to that I always thought was a sane human being -- sobbing and ranting for like 3 weeks on every media outlet. And that dog's mug was everywhere! I mean ... it's A DOG! It's alive! It's healthy! Urgh...
LOL, sorry, I was just so annoyed at not being able to escape...
You've got television and film, so it's twice the relationship, hair, make-up and fashion drama to snark about. I love it.
I used to glimpse at the pre-show when Joan Rivers was on E! It was just such an entertainment! You never knew what would come out of her mouth and it was comedy gold. LOL. Plus, like you said, it's fun to see the people mingle who otherwise wouldn't even meet. Trouble is, for me, lately, the shows and films I like seldom get attention of this weird little organization. And those who do, I am not that interested in watching on the red carpet. Maybe one or two people, but not enough to get me to tune in. But pre-shows are fun for snarking, that's true. :))
4. The whole HSM thing seem to come out of nowhere for me and all a sudden Zac was everywhere. I can't believe I know his name.
6. Everywhere - you cannot flip on the television without hearing the story or seeing the pictures.
9. McDonalds for the brain.
15. It was either Britney S. or Lindsay L., you can even put in Paris H. there.
16. I agree! That and the stupid mohawk hair.
Yeah, HSM is a complete mystery to me. I'd understand it if it were good. But it's not. The music is bad, the singing is mediocre, and Zac whatshisface is ... completely orange, for starters. LOL. He's got the fakest looking tan ever, he is the nonthreatening, a-sexual, pre-pubescent girl idol. High School is where he should stay. LOL.
"McDonalds for the brain!" LOL. Very well put. :))
And yeah, Britney, Lindsay, Paris... Who can tell them apart, anyway? :)
Oh, man, the mohawk! And, again, I resent the fact that I -- who doesn't even watch AI! -- had to see it everywhere! LOL.
It's sort of sad I follow every single thing on that list. I agree with 95% of it.
I would also put on there the supposed "backlash against too thin women" that seems to be on the verge of happening every year.
Trying to convince people that leggings are fashionable, when you know they will be giving people shit for it in a matter of months.
Anything that is discussed on Showbiz Tonight, or E! for that matter. I miss the days when E was an actual entertainment channel with behind the scenes and a show devoted to nothing but movie trailers.
LOL. So true! They tell us in great detail about this "backlash" that is totally happening, and yet, no one in Hollywood seems to get any heavier. And Jennifer Love Hewitt is on the cover of People mag for "ballooning" to the awful, enormous size 2! The horror! :))
Trying to convince people that leggings are fashionable, when you know they will be giving people shit for it in a matter of months.
God, yes. Leggings and baby-doll dresses. The kind that makes you look pregnant no matter how flat your stomach is. Personally, I'm holding out for the big return of the parachute pants. In neon colors. :))
Anything that is discussed on Showbiz Tonight, or E! for that matter. I miss the days when E was an actual entertainment channel with behind the scenes and a show devoted to nothing but movie trailers.
Sigh. I feel very old. I remember this, fondly. I also remember when MTV played music... Yeah, so quaint and antiquated... LOL.
That's basically the only reason I'm excited for Californication (and David, of course) getting nods. Will they win? I'm a cynic at heart, and David so rarely got what he deserved when his finest show was on the air (X-Files), so I doubt it matters much now how many out there are applauding his latest work. The nod made me very happy though.
But, to address the list!
1. Agreed. I didn't love them in the '90s, and I certainly don't now.
3. I like to live in a pretend world where reality TV doesn't even exist. Dancing With the, what, sorry?
4. Go away forever, please. Disney can come with you (as long as they continue funding Pixar).
7. I... haven't seen any of Judd's stuff. I liked David's portrayal of a character very like him in The TV Set, though. That was Jake Kasdan's film, however. Very quirky and intelligent, with just the right amount of depressing realism for my taste.
8. Yes, please. Michael Bay can stop making films any time.
9. That was the guy who was in Enchanted, right? Dempsey or whoever? I liked him in that, but I like to pretend Grey's Anatomy doesn't exist either, so...
10. YES. PLEASE. GO AWAY.
13. This I could agree with, if (a) I'd cared about HBO when they were the "it" pay-cable channel (which I didn't), and (b) I didn't enjoy two of their fantastic shows so much.
17. Can we burn them all? And then laugh when everyone whines?
18. I reiterate my response to #9 (and that is the show this insipid term originated from, isn't it?).
20. LOLOL. Last I remember reading he resigned, yes? I am most happy with that. Now, if only Dick Cheney would do the same...
In conclusion: Go away, KBell. Stop making fugly kissy faces on magazine covers and posing for photo ops with people's dogs. Bye now!
You make me laugh, girl. Happy holidays to you too, sweetie. ;)
It's political. The idea of choosing one performance that's supposedly better than any other... It's so absurd to me. I find all awards an exercise in playground logic. Which projects have bigger names, whose agents lobbied the hardest, sent the coolest gifts, got enough media backing, made enough friends to garner votes... The only good thing to come out of it -- apart from being considered "hot" for a while, until the next "hot" thing -- is that fans get to watch the red carpet. What I laugh at is how seriously it's all taken.
David was nominated? I guess good for him. Goes to show how cyclical this is. The critics beat him up for years. It must be nice to be a darling for a change. I'm glad for your sake. I know you love the show, and you'll have something to watch the GGs for. :)
3. I like to live in a pretend world where reality TV doesn't even exist
I don't mind some of it. Some competition-based ones could be fun. But 90% of the shows are so bad. I like dancing. I wouldn't mind this contest with semi-known amateurs if it weren't so publicized and masquerading as important.
4. Go away forever, please.
I get that it's a pre-teen obsession, but I would like to go through a week without seeing or hearing about HSM! Bad music, terrible acting, atrocious singing... As someone who actually likes musicals, I am genuinely offended. LOL.
7. I... haven't seen any of Judd's stuff.
The TV Set was fine enough, but that's not really Apatow's thing. His stuff isn't terrible, but neither is it the second coming it's being treated as. It's sophomoric, and the jokes sort of repeat themselves from film to film. :)
8.Michael Bay can stop making films any time.
Is there a petition we can sign? LOL.
9. That was the guy who was in Enchanted, right?
That's the guy. And McNipples is the joking nickname given to Chris Lowell. I had a fit of laughter when I heard. He sure has giant nipples that he flashes proudly. But I digress... I can take or leave the show. I don't begrudge people loving it. What I object to is the non-stop media blitz. I don't even buy the magazines or watch entertainment shows, and yet, I can't escape! I want to be McFree! LOL.
10. YES. PLEASE. GO AWAY.
Honestly! And again, I don't want to take it away from those who love it. It's not the show's existence that bothers me. But it's treated sometimes like it's the only one. I can't escape the promos, the faces, the product tie-ins. I get it: They've got the best publicity machine! With superpowers! Now, can I please be left alone and never see or hear from any of them? LOL.
13. if (a) I'd cared about HBO when they were the "it" pay-cable channel (which I didn't), and (b) I didn't enjoy two of their fantastic shows so much.
HBO has some fantastic shows. Showtime does, too. As do NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, USA, FX and hey, maybe CW can get in on the act. This idea that people watch networks, not shows, is absurd -- the attempt to quantify and homogenize taste. People and interests differ. There's bottom crap and there are a few brilliant shows. The rest reside in-between. I get why critics try to assign tags to certain networks: they have to do something justify their salaries. But I don't have to buy into it.
17. Can we burn them all? And then laugh when everyone whines?
Can we skip the burning? I don't want to pollute! LOL.
18.(and that is the show this insipid term originated from, isn't it?).
I don't know if they invented it or anything. But now Oprah got in on the act. The term is stupid. As a euphemism, it doesn't work. As a sound, it grates. Something about a grownup uttering this silly word makes me want to slap them.:)
20. Now, if only Dick Cheney would do the same...
I have this sickening fear that Dick Cheyney is never going away. He already looks like Mount Rushmore. He might find a way to stick around even after the term! :)
Stop making fugly kissy faces on magazine covers!
Lord, yes! That latest was grotesque. And awful. Again, I resent the fact that I even saw it! LOL.
Thank you, dear! You make me laugh, too! And you have no idea how important it is to me these days! *Hugs you!* :)
God, I know. A good friend of mine summed it up best a little while ago, when good reviews for his film with Halle Berry (Things We Lost in the Fire, which I thought was pretty great) came out:
"Am I the only person who finds it a bit condescending, the way the press has suddenly decided they've "discovered" David again now that he's in some movies/tv they actually like? I mean, for his sake I'm glad they're being complimentary again, and it's certainly possible, goodness knows, that his movie choices are getting better, but it's just... they seem to adopt this attitude like "oh, David's recovered from the X-Files" and that he's doing something totally different lately, and it's just not true. I think he's simply gotten lucky/better at choosing material."
Seriously. On the one hand, it's been amazing seeing how positively his show has been received (and, in my opinion, deservedly so), but on the other? I just kind of want to smack people. David didn't "suddenly" become funny and talented; he's always been. Y'all just weren't paying attention, sorry.
As to actually watching the GGs? I think they're one of the more boring awards shows (and nothing could possibly top them from 1997 :D), and since David won't be attending anyway (he refuses to cross strike lines simply for an awards show, which makes me want to hug him), my final verdict is likely to be: meh. Whether he wins or not, I still love the show (as has everyone else who's watched off of my recommendation.)
Was Apatow even involved in The TV Set? I can't remember, but I think the only time I recall his name being mentioned in conjuncture was when David said he based a bit of his performance as Mike on Apatow. I always figured it was, at the end of the day, Kasdan's film alone.
I want to kill whatever it was that decided to make Heroes The Next Big Thing. I'd love to know what comic fans think of it; it practically mocks the Marvel generation. I've never been much of a Marvel fan (I only liked Spider-Man), but as a comic artist, I find myself a bit offended by it.
Honestly, re: networks... I have a hard time giving much credit to the big 4 lately. Well, more like in the past five years, possibly longer. To me, 90% of their programming is drivel (and most of what I watch on them is reruns of better shows from the past, anyway). I've had more success with cable shows lately, and I don't think that's all hype. Also, I don't intend to go near CW again with a ten-foot pole. They don't even know what programming they want, and there isn't a single show of theirs I want to watch now, that's for sure!
Ugh, Dick Cheney NEEDS to go away. I'm still not sure who I want to vote for (I'm most interested in Obama and Ron Paul, and would stab myself in the eye before I vote for Hillary Clinton), but... he just needs to... not be there.
I hope you're doing well, sweetie! When I see Jason today, I'll definitely be thinking of you. :)
Well.... It's usually incredibly subjective. I am not, I'm very, very sorry to say, a fan of the show. (I am, however, a fan of David). Not the point. Clearly, the critics like it. Great, if it mattered materially. It doesn't. If critical acclaim influenced careers to any significant degree, Michael Bay would not make another movie ever again. But bad reviews are upsetting to those involved, however irrelevant they are to the actual success with the audiences. And because of that, and as a fan of his, I always cringed when DD got bad reviews. But I cannot say they were always wholly unfounded. I suffered through "Connie and Carla," for goodness sake (you could tell David suffered too). LOL. So yeah, he was in some less-thank-great movies. And in some decent but largely ignored ones. So what? That's the career of any actor. With very few exceptions that have less to do with taste in picking project and more with sheer luck of being offered great ones. Bottom line, I care too little for the critics to give it much thought (though I realize they matter to those in the industry) and I can't get up enough motivation to find the critical attitude insulting right now. Especially with the overall positive.
Was Apatow even involved in The TV Set?
Honestly, no idea. I just wish he'd stop, period. LOL.
I want to kill whatever it was that decided to make Heroes The Next Big Thing.
I certainly killed my TVGuide subscription. LOL. The day they put KB on the cover as the new hot thing that made Heroes great! -- and how effing insulting to the actual cast was that?! -- was the day I stopped it. It'll blow over. Like "Desperate Housewives," "Grey's," etc., when the "next big thing to end all big things" comes around. I just wish it'll happen already. :))
To me, 90% of their programming is drivel...
I wouldn't say that. Personally, to me about 70% of all TV is drivel, but I allow for the possibility that I my judgment is not infallible. LOL. Hmm, past few years. Big 4 network shows that, at their best, and however short-run, are different, interesting, surprising, innovative, well-written, well-acted, and otherwise far from drivel. In no particular order or time-line: "The Office," "Friday Night Lights," "Arrested Development," "Studio 60" (love it, hate it, it stood out), "Life," "House," "Veronica Mars" (yes, at its best, absolutely), "Everwood," "24," "Prison Break," "30Rock," "Lost," "My Name is Earl." Off the top of my head and I’m sure I’m missing a few. And I’m not even listing the decent workhorses that deliver, like "CSI" (original) or "Num3ers," to name a couple. What annoys me with this worshipping of cable is that the game is so rigged. They have a lot more money, a lot fewer restrictions, and they can afford to support projects in a way the broadcast networks absolutely can't. That isn’t to say that they don’t have content. I am in love with the "Flight of the Conchords," I like "Big Love," I appreciate "Dexter" (even if it leaves me cold), "Weeds" is brilliantly and dryly funny, I adore "Battlestar Galactica," and probably I’m forgetting some. But for every one of these, there is "Nip/Tuck," or "Dirt," or "Brotherhood," or "Rescue Me," or dozens of over-priced, over-hyped unwatchables. Cable, even the subscription, is as capable of putting out turds. They are just covered in sprinkley fairy-dust so it’s not as noticeable at first. "Huff"?
Back to my original point: I can’t imagine choosing to watch something because it’s on a particular network. Or choosing not to for the same reason. If CW gets something comparable to VM at its best, or Everwood, or hires Joss Whedon, I’m there in a blink of an eye. Even now, "Aliens in America" they can be proud of as is.
I'm still not sure who I want to vote for
I don’t know either. I am not even sure Obama, or any dem right now, can take the GOPs. And Dick needs to get off this planet! LOL.
When I see Jason today, I'll definitely be thinking of you.
Squeeeeee!!! That’s all I’ve got right now. Seriously, my brain has just short-circuited! LOL. Thank you so, so much, dearest! You are my hero, and I hope you know that!!! :)
As to bad reviews, David's never seemed to care very much, unless the project or role is particularly personal to him (like, say, House of D, which I personally like very much). But he still seems to roll with the blows quite well, and as long as he keeps doing what he's been doing (i.e. doing whatever the hell he wants, regardless of what critics say), I won't be disappointed. I haven't been yet; however the rest of a film may be (good or bad) I always enjoy watching him. That's actually where Jason doesn't quite match up for me (yet, I hope) -- I really, really tried, but no matter how much I love him, I still just can't stand Moonlight, lol. Maybe if he had a larger role... no, probably not even then. To this day, every single vampire show I've tried to watch rubs me the wrong way entirely. I thought, before trying any of them, I'd like them, what with their world-weaving nature (since I'm a huge fan of mythology and the like), but... UGH, no. Turned out to be a total mismatch.
Heh, I've never had a subscription to TV Guide. Back before we got satellite, which deems the thing useless (and that was many years ago), we just used the guide that came in the Sunday paper. I'd basically just hunt down and squirrel away issues with covers I liked (which is how I ended up with several classic XF issues, lol).
Don't get me wrong about networks, though! I never discount a show simply because of what channel it's airing on. I suppose what I meant is that... I've found a lot less to watch that's to my taste in the past five years, on any station, than most other people seem to have done. For example, I know for a fact I'm watching probably 70-80% less TV than pretty much everyone I know (not counting reruns). Maybe I'm just too picky? All I know is I don't have the energy or time to devote to shows that bore/annoy me or just don't interest me enough to keep my eyes on the screen. From those examples you listed, I'm afraid I must include "Life," "House," (like Hugh Laurie, can't stand the show) "Everwood," "24," (it's past its prime, but I loved the first three years) "Prison Break," (GAH, PLEASE NO) "30Rock," (maybe if I didn't hate Alec Baldwin, because I really like Tina Fey) "Lost," (they lost me midway through S2) "My Name is Earl," "Num3ers," and I'm very sorry to say "CSI" as well. I loved the first five years or so, but... it stopped feeling like that show I had come to love midway through S6 or so. Now that I hear Sara is no more, I definitely am not interested in tuning in again to unfamiliar faces. I also haven't been able to get into "Flight of the Conchords," or "Big Love," but that's probably mostly due to laziness (let's face it, many of these I ticked off likely are). And I still have yet to find anything on the CW that I can take even remotely seriously.
It was a good day, seeing Jason (all days that include him are, pretty much by default; I defy anyone to have a bad day when he's in it), but I'm also extremely tired. I didn't sleep much before going up there, we were there for several hours, and the round trip to L.A. is a long one. Must sleep...
Sigh, pretty much all of it, give or take an episode. I have a friend with subscription who taped them for me. I watched them all at once. "Not a fan" is putting it mildly. LOL. I am very sorry. I know that when you love something it's not fun to hear someone ... not. Which is why I kept my mouth shut. Because why ruin it for others? :)
I won't be disappointed. I haven't been yet; however the rest of a film may be (good or bad) I always enjoy watching him.
I had a period when I did. That was the first feverish fan-girl blush. A few years ago. As I mentioned, I even went to see "Connie and Carla." (The headache is still present, lol.). However I've settled into normal liking since. "House of D" was a good film. I enjoyed it. Some of the others I saw, not so much, not even David. But I saw them anyway in support. LOL. But I'm not terribly concerned. He's got enough supporters and he is the critical darling again. He can afford to do without me. LOL.
That's actually where Jason doesn't quite match up for me.
For me, it's the opposite right now. I figure David's fine. JD's new and needs my support. Which I'm happy to give. LOL. In all seriousness, though, "Moonlight" is my crack right now. I realize it's bad, but I can't stop enjoying it. There will be a reaction in all probability, but until then... :)
To this day, every single vampire show I've tried to watch rubs me the wrong way entirely.
No need to apologize for phobias. LOL. I love Buffy, I couldn't care less about its genre. I don't like Ann Rice, and again, it's not because of the subject matter. I just don't like her writing. But I understand that a subject can be a turn off. I certainly have my share of topics I can't watch/read.
Re: the shows I listed. I don't watch half of them. "Lost," "Num3ers," "My Name Is Earl" "Prison Break," etc. In fact, I watch very little, and what I do catch is usually after the fact, on DVDs. They were examples of "not drivel," whether they are my cup of tea or not. And as to quality of any given season, the cable channels are famous for dropping theirs after the first or second year. "Six Feet Under" should have been buried that deep after Season 2. And many others I could name. Thing is, they were something when they started.
I didn't sleep much before going up there, we were there for several hours, and the round trip to L.A. is a long one. Must sleep...
You absolutely MUST! Thank you so much for doing this, dear! I adore the fact that you make an effort to tell us about this and show pictures, but the last thing I want is for you to kill yourself in the process! LOL. When you are well-rested and wide-awake there will be time enough for the report! Squeeee!
Heh, that's very diplomatic of you! Of course I am sorry we no longer have a show to enjoy together, but such is the way of things, I guess. Perhaps in the future? But I've been so apathetic about TV in general lately, outside of my very few favorites, who knows when I'll get into something new again...
But I'm not terribly concerned. He's got enough supporters and he is the critical darling again. He can afford to do without me. LOL.
Well, for me it's really nothing to do with concern. I'd be silly to be concerned for David's sake, after all. He's been pretty much set since 1997, after all. ;) It's just a matter of a guarantee of enjoying at least one thing about something. I was actually hoping to have that with Moonlight, but like I said, it just didn't happen. Jason always entertains me of course, but he couldn't carry the show for me, especially with his limited screentime. And since I don't like anything else about it, well... there's only so long I could watch, lol. At least David is a sure thing for me. (And he has been for the last... 12 years, so I don't really expect that to change any time soon, lol.)
As for JDoh, technically speaking I don't have any support to offer. My viewership counts for nothing (satellite subscriber, and we're not a Nielsen household anyway), and beyond that, there's not much a fan can do, other than buying DVDs, right? At least in terms of keeping the show alive; from what I've seen on LJ, it's not like it needs help in the word-of-mouth department. I offered support in person today; he knows that I'm still a fan of his, whether or not I'm always watching what he's doing. That's the most anyone can really give, isn't it?
It was fun today, though. Just like last year, he stuck around for quite a long time after they tore down the race (about an hour, maybe?), and talked with all of us about plenty of things. As strange as this may sound, the most bizarre thing about being around Jason is how easily he will fall into your comfort zone -- he doesn't seem to care whether someone is in his personal space. It had been a long time since I'd last seen him, so when he walked over with us toward the starting line, to signal the start of the 5/10K portion of the race, I was surprised for a minute when he fell into step next to me, asked me how I was doing, and we had a conversation on the way over, bumping shoulders. He's bizarrely normal, lol. That's the only way I know how to put it.
I'm nothing if not diplomatic! LOL.
Of course I am sorry we no longer have a show to enjoy together, but such is the way of things, I guess. Perhaps in the future? But I've been so apathetic about TV in general lately, outside of my very few favorites, who knows when I'll get into something new again...
I'm pretty generally apathetic about anything I don't specifically enjoy. That is, it's not on my radar most of the time and I don't expect it to register until it does. Every show I ever loved sort of caught me by surprise. So, who knows? Maybe next season we'll find something together. :)
Well, for me it's really nothing to do with concern.
I was kidding. Of course the most a fan can do is watch or buy DVDs. I've gone to see plenty of things I ended up hating out of love for, say, David, or other actors. But certainly there's a limit to how much one can do this. If you don't enjoy something, you don't enjoy it. I can't stomach David's current show, for instance. I will, however, definitely run to see the new X-Files movie when it comes out.

Sigh. First of, how envious am I! Hmm, maybe I should invite him into my personal space? Okay, I think I just officially weirded myself out! :)) But seriously, one of the things that keeps popping up in many accounts is how surprisingly "normal" he is. That is, how non-standoffish and relaxing. I love that. And how unlike someone else we won't mention (who is fast becoming She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named! Snort. I figure if I don't mention her by name, maybe she'll go away?!). Honestly, it's a measure of any actor with any kind of a following -- how they relate to the fans. It doesn't have to be fancy. It could be with humor, like David (I hear) does, or with a friendly discourse, like JD. As long as it's a positive experience. And I am so glad it was that today.
Now, go to sleep already! LOL. Seriously, you need to rest. The way you've been going, there won't be much of you left to go to Canada! :)) Thank you so much for the trip and the story. It really is so kind of you to share with us!
I am sure you're not at all surprised to hear I'm ridiculously excited about this, yes? It's going to be a long seven months, but it's already been so much fun. I didn't get to do this the last time around, back in '98, so, y'know.
It is the whole "normal" thing that crops up a lot, isn't it? I suppose it's taken as unusual because, if you've got any sense of decorum or manners at all, I figure it's only fair to give celebrities a bit of a berth when you're near them. Not because they should consider themselves untouchable or something like that, but simply because it's got to be harrowing, constantly being in the focus of attention. If I were in their place, I'd want to have at least some control over how close people get to me, especially in such numbers and so often. So it took me a little while to get... used to Jason again, I guess. He's very personable (and quite dorky, too), so it doesn't take too long. I shouldn't be surprised by it anymore, having spent so much time around him, but it always seems to catch me off guard. Maybe it's because many non-celebrity Americans are also obsessive about personal space? I dunno.
David certainly uses humor, at least in my experience (and that of those I know who have interacted with him), but what I find interesting about him is he can use it for a variety of things; when people get too intrusive or just plain obnoxious, he can use humor as a barrier. However, when he's around people who mean him no harm, he's just genuinely nice and funny. He was quite normal too, which really surprised me (considering the comparison between he and JDoh, for example), and also weirdly calming to be near. I was perfectly fine with standing there and watching him interact with others before I approached him, because of that. I love his cleverness.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll be able to wait until I get some things sent to me from Pam (who was with Roz and I and the others today) before I make my full post, but if it won't take too long I'd like to. She has a bit of video of some pretty great moments, including a short little interview Roz conducted on behalf of... some fan site? I never was sure who for, but it was very funny. I'd hate to paraphrase the things he said if I don't have to, because it wouldn't be nearly as funny. ;)
Shocked! I tell you! LOL. No, not surprised at all. :)

Neither did I. I didn't "discover" XF until 2002. That is, I knew of it, I just didn't watch, didn't think I'd like it. Go figure. LOL.

I think I would, too. Then again, I dislike people on principle... LOL. No, seriously, I think with JD in particular, it's that he is still new to this whole fan thing and he hasn't had some of those really bad experiences you hear about. Like having to fend off a really obnoxious stalker. And I truly hope he never has to. Plus it's his personality, too, at least a little. He -- by all reports -- tends to consider everyone as nice and friendly until proved otherwise. Again, it makes him vulnerable (and yes, somewhat dorky), but I hope nothing happens to change that. Because it's a unique quality and not an affectation with him. There are plenty of celebs who affect niceness (and I don't blame them as a rule, their image is part of the job, no matter how they actually feel), but with JD it's genuine.
Maybe it's because many non-celebrity Americans are also obsessive about personal space? I dunno.
That's true. And again, I don't blame people for that. There are a lot of ... weirdness out there. You have to protect yourself.

Exactly. And that's the best thing to use with obnoxious people.

Thank you!! I'll go check Roz's LJ, and I'll wait as long as you need for your report. It's always worth the wait. Thank you again, dear. I hope you got some rest! :)
I did notice this year that he's obviously gaining experience. Not just that it had been (aside from the brief hello at Comic-Con) a year since I had seen him, but that he's been learning in the interim. He's still very much the same, but what stood out to me is that he's gotten much better at preparing himself to answer certain questions. He still hardly has any filter at all (which I love, lol), but when pulled aside by some woman who was there who (I think?) runs a Moonlight fan site, he sat down at a table with her and did an interview. I even noticed it when Roz was taping her short piece; he seemed more at ease with answering questions out of the blue than I'd ever seen him before. (His answers still cracked me up, though.)
That's basically a long way of saying: he's maturing professionally, but he's still very dorky and extremely generous with both his time and his enthusiasm. So, all good change that I can see.
And that's the best thing to use with obnoxious people.
Haha, so true. What was the funniest thing to me, watching David with others, is that... all these years since he's gained stardom, and people still don't "get" his humor most of the time. Since his sense of humor is very similar to mine, nothing went over my head, but it was both funny and frustrating, watching things fly over the heads of everyone else. (He's obviously more than used to it by now, but I suppose what I mean is that I like that not only does he not change himself just because not everyone gets it, I also love that he sometimes uses this to deal with obnoxious people. It's very funny to watch.) Also, there's a great new interview out with him online (with Times Online) which I'm currently reading and loving. I love the ones where they actually let him talk. I could pick that man's brain forever.
Heh, I certainly hope my post will be worth the wait! :)
So true. And the funniest thing for me (well, not funny "ha-ha") is that he is, apparently, a lot more aware of what has transpired than I realized. At least he is aware now. Some of the things he let slip in interviews. But it's so quite and subtle, you have to really know the situation well to pick up on those. Which is the thing I like: he will not, even now, badmouth anyone. No matter how they treated him. But he won't be fooled by them anymore, either. Which is the best outcome, really. :)

That is really good to hear! I honestly hope he'll never lose the inner dork (I love that inner dork so, lol!), but I, too, noticed that he is more at ease. I'm guessing that, after being a bit shell-shocked post-VM (or, really, during the last year of it), he steadied himself and realized that there is life after it, and that he is going to be okay one way or another (fingers crossed).

That's because his humor is very dry. And a lot of people don't get that. It's like being tone-death. LOL. I also think he does it on purpose sometimes, because, let's face it, it's fun on occasion to make fun of people right to their faces without them realizing it. LOL. (The people in question usually deserve it, so I don't waste time feeling sorry for them). Bottom line, it's a perfect way to neutralize the annoying ones and have a little fun in the process. :)
Heh, I certainly hope my post will be worth the wait! :)
When are they not?! LOL. Honestly, pictures alone would have done it, but your commentary and the recaps are always great. :)
I think, since he hasn't lost the inner dork yet, it likely won't happen. Which is great, and I hope I'm right. He's just so cute and dorky! How can anyone not love that?

HAHA yes, SO true. I do that all the time, so it was a kick to watch David doing the exact same thing. He kept shooting me little conspirator-like glances too, because he could tell that I was trying to stifle laughter. I decided to keep quiet about the fact that I spent the entire time wanting to leap the fence and hug him for being so awesome, LOL. I still have no clue how he managed to be so energetic and friendly after running a (nearly) two-hour triathlon, but David has always amazed me, so. It fits. ;)
Yeah, I figure it's the Invisible Children connection? KB is still in it (though, since it doesn't bring much photo-opping, she doesn't really tout it. Then again, maybe it's kudos to her that she doesn't use it for publicity all that much. It looks like she's dating a guy from there named -- I kid you not -- Jedidiah! For all I know, he may be a very nice dude. For all I care, he may be next in line to become Pope. The name alone earns him my unrelenting giggling!) :)
(while also telling us he still talks to Ryan, Francis and Enrico, the last of whom he recently performed with -- ensue very funny story)
Weeee! And now I can't wait even more! You have to tell the story! I realize you'll probably do it on your LJ, but please do tell! LOL.
I agree that it's great that he doesn't badmouth anyone. He's a far better soul than I. ;)
Or I! I admire this in him all the more for the reason that I lack that quality completely! LOL.
He's just so cute and dorky! How can anyone not love that?
I know, right?! I love the dorkiness and the lack of "look how suave and sleek I am" that so many Hollywood people project.
He kept shooting me little conspirator-like glances too, because he could tell that I was trying to stifle laughter.
LOL. That's great! He probably isn't used to finding people in the crowd who get it, you know?
I decided to keep quiet about the fact that I spent the entire time wanting to leap the fence and hug him for being so awesome, LOL.
Probably a smart move. You know, in terms of not freaking him out! LOL. That way you are memorable for having understood his jokes and not for having weirded the hell out of him by following that up with some athletic performance of your own. *Giggle!
Yeah, I plain don't understand how anyone can run, swim, bike, whatever for 2 hours, period. Being energetic after that and not, you know, killing anyone who comes within a reaching distance soon after, is utterly beyond my comprehension! :))
He probably isn't used to finding people in the crowd who get it, you know?
Haha, probably not. He did actually thank me, of all things, for making him laugh, which I thought was sweetly funny. I couldn't quite believe I made him laugh; he doesn't do it much, for such a funny man.
What was really nuts about the triathlon is how well he does, not only for his age, but for the fact that he quite simply rolls out of bed and decides to do it. (I will never understand such a decision, but I applaud him for being able to make it, lol!) He does very well, especially in the swimming. I think he was one of the first out of the water in his division. But yeah, I'd die doing all of that, and wouldn't even think to be friendly afterward, lol.
Gah! You do realize that I am now going insane?! I understand, though, if you are sworn to secrecy, so I won't push. LOL. But I reserve the right to pout! :))
Oh, Jedidiah! Such a winner, too:
(*I know, I know, he may be the best human being in the Universe for all I know. But it doesn't prevent me from doubling over with laughter!).
He did actually thank me, of all things, for making him laugh, which I thought was sweetly fun
That's cute! Honestly, I don't think he meets a lot of people in random fan groups that get him. So, it's only natural he appreciated you. :)

Aww. I like to think so. :)
It makes perfect sense, and I wouldn't want you to break a confidence. I guess I can live with not knowing. LOL. :)
Firstly, Mulder's back! (It's like 1998 all over again, look at him!)
Secondly, a preview of things to come. :)
And *thud* for the preview! I love you, and that's all there is to it! :))
Haha, you think I'd disagree? It is MULDER. (I want to pet his fluffy, cute hair.)
I hope you enjoy the rest of the JDoh photos, too. I'm sure you will. ;)
