The Emmys.

Didn't watch it, but the results are in. Yawn.
1. The “Goodbye, It’s Been Swell” Award
“The Sopranos” for the best drama. Not that it isn’t a decent show. But they nominated it every year, and every year it lost to something the geezers at the Academy were more comfortable with. This was their last chance, and, honestly, pitted against the laughably weak “Grey’s Anatomy,” muddled and hampered by frankly awful writing “Heroes,” the joke of a “drama” “Boston Legal” and same old “House,” what else was there to vote for? It isn’t as if “Friday Night Lights” or “Battlestar Galactica” – just to name a couple -- were on last year or anything.
2. The “They Have Alec Baldwin and That’s Funny” Award
“30 Rock” for the best comedy. Yeah, I know, it’s not the worst one out there. It’s certainly not the worst one nominated. That honor goes to “Three and a Half Men.” And all things considered, it was a toss up between them and “The Office” (which is the more consistently funny and better overall acted show). I know they say “30 Rock” had that “classic” “Mary Tyler Moor”/“Taxi” feel. To me it spells “old fashioned.” Which is not a terrible thing. And Tina Fey is a good writer. But it being the best comedy on TV right now? Meh.
Incidentally, I fully expect “The Flight of the Concords” not to be nominated next year. Because a truly funny stuff that’s off-kilter and unusual – unless it’s helmed by a “name” (like, say, Ron Howard) – will fly by the academy like a concord.
3. The “We Are Senile and Enjoy Inexplicable Redundancy” Award
James Spader for best actor in a drama. Yeah. There are hardly words.
4. The “Connie Britton is Too Obscure to Nominate” Award
Sallie Field for best actress in a drama. I would like to say that I have never watched a single episode of “Brothers and Sisters,” what with it running against something else I watch and having Calista Flockhart as the lead (plus I get stomach cramps just looking at Rob Low). So, for all I know, SF kicked overhyped Kyra Sedgwick’s, ever-present Mariska Hargitay’s, barely noticeable Patricia Arquette’s, very noticeable but rather always the same Minnie Driver’s, and “enough already!” Edie Falco’s asses this year.
But you still can’t convince me that she was better, stronger, subtler and more powerful than Connie Britton.
5. The “Thank God It’s Not That Monk Guy Again!” Award
Ricky Gervais for best actor in a comedy. This one actually made sense. “Extras” was hysterical. And his only competition was Steve Carell, whom I love from way back when he was on “The Daily Show.” But I am okay with Ricky. (And how come “Extras” weren’t nominated in the comedy category?)
And thank you, again, for not giving it to Tony Shalhoub! His shtick got old 3 years ago. Not to mention, “Monk” is painfully unfunny. And I don’t even have the words for seeing Charlie Sheen in this category. Urgh.
6. The “Lauren Graham Who?” Award
America Ferrera for best actress in a comedy. I have nothing against her. She is good and the show is mildly amusing if over-the-top and taken way too seriously. And Felicity Huffman is and always will be the best actress in this category. Though “Desperate Housewives” did her no favors last year. But how about, instead on nominating the same “Old Christine” every time, picking someone actually funny, if not as well publicized? Though, God knows the ship for good comedic choices has sailed a few years ago.
7. The “It’s Too Many Of You Out There and We Can Barely Remember The Few Show’s Titles As It Is” Award
Katherine Heigl for best supporting actress in a drama. Now, she is not bad, don’t get me wrong. But better than Sandra Oh? Meh. And, for goodness sakes, there were other shows this year besides “The Sopranos” (does Lorrain Bracco even do anything anymore?) or “Grey’s.” There are certainly better performances out there. But hey, it’s the Emmys. It’s not about acting at all.
8. The “What’s That ‘Subtlety’ Thing You Speak Of?” Award
Jamie Pressly for best supporting actress in a comedy. Again, she does a competent job playing against the type …. Ahahahahahahaha!!! Sorry, I can’t do this. Snort. Yes, she does well. But better than Jenna Fischer? Sigh.
9. The “Obligatory Old Guard but Thanks for Not Making It Shatner Again” Award
Terry O’Quinn for best supporting actor in a drama. I don’t watch “Lost.” But I have seen Terry O’Quinn in gazillion things and he is always, invariably playing the same type of character. The same way. He is awfully good at it, and kudos and all for filling a niche, but award-worthy? Then again, it could have been worse. It could have been Shatner yet again for playing the same gasbag for years now. Or Masi Oka, who is misplaced here, because if he belongs on any ballot, it’s in the comedy category. Which brings me to …
10. “We Love Neurotic But Don’t Get Deadpan” Award
Jeremy Piven for best supporting actor in a comedy. Again, could have been worse. Could have been Jon Cryer. Should have been Rainn Wilson. At least the dude brings on the laughs. But man this category makes me livid for missing, yet again, John C McGinley. As Dr. Cox would have said, “people are bastards. Bastard-coated, bastard-filled bastards.” ‘Nuff said.
There were other amusements. “The Office” won the best writing, but not the best comedy. “Battlestar Galactica” and “Lost” were nominated for the best writing but not for drama series. Because writing is completely unimportant, people! Snort. And I could go on, but I won’t.
All in all, it was the usual “Who Gives A Flying Kite? We’re Here to Judge Fashion!” annual event. So glad I missed it!
And speaking of being glad to miss something, was that Kristen Bell wrapped in a hospital sheet, sitting in the front row with Masi Oka and blocking the actual cast of “Heroes”? Because that was comedy gold!

Urgh. I need a drink.

KB always sucks, no matter what. I hope they kill her character off when she pulls her normal diva antics on the show. Seriously girl needs to understand she is petite, not Giselle. She can't wear this stuff!
See, you'd think the idea would be to embrace the different! And age should not even be a consideration. There should only be one criteria: quality. How good a writing, how good of a performance, etc. It shouldn't matter if the show is different (or, rather, it's a plus! Who wants the same old stuff all the time?), or has a young cast, or is on a tiny network not that many people are watching, or didn't get the huge ratings, or doesn't boast big names... Sadly, all of these things matter deeply to the Academy. Which is why year after year we can predict who will not be nominated to almost a certainty. Sigh. FNL damn well deserved to be at least nominated, and Connie did the best job bar none last year.
KB always dresses as if she were 6" tall. It's bizarre to me. I get that not everyone has a sense of style or an understanding, but doesn't she pay a stylist to do these things for her? Weird. :)
2. This is a tough one for me. I love that 30 Rock won because I do think it's a very funny show, plus it almost didn't get renewed and I'm hoping that the Emmy win will give it a boost(though that didn't work for Arrested Development, so who knows.)
I love The Office and would've been extremely pleased if it had won, but I think in terms of quality, they're pretty evenly matched.
4. I'm upset that Connie Britton didn't get nominated because I think she did a better job then all of them, but I'm particularly upset that Sally Field won. I have watched a couple of episodes of Brothers and Sisters, and while she's always good, she's not up there with the others. I happen to love Kyra Sedgwick and don't think she's overhyped at all, so I was really pulling for her to win.
5. Agreed. Extras is hysterical and I'm glad to see Ricky get his props.
As for why Extras didn't get nominated in the comedy category? My guess is that the academy figured they were killing two birds with one stone since RG created the show.
6. This intrigues me because while Ugly Betty is clearly a comedy, AF's role isn't clearly a comedic one. She isn't even playing the straight man, her role is more serious than not and I hardly ever laugh at her character, though I do enjoy the show quite a bit. I guess one could argue the same about Desperate Housewives, but I don't watch that show enough to get a feel for drama vs. comedy.
7. I think everyone in that category deserved to win it over Katherine Heigl. It's not that I dislike her, it's just that I feel Sandra Oh's performance is better by orders of magnitude and I can't understand why she didn't win.
8. But better than Jenna Fischer?
Yes. Sorry, but I think JP deserved that Emmy over JF. I don't see her performance as over the top at all and I feel her role is more challenging than JF's. I'm not knocking Jenna Fischer, she's done a great job with her role and definitely deserved to be nominated but I believe the Academy got this one right.
9. I was shocked by this. To be honest, I thought TR Knight was a lock for this one. I couldn't believe it when Terry O'Quinn's name was called.
10. I was pulling for either Rainn Wilson or Neil Patrick Harris. I don't watch Entourage so I can't comment on Jeremy Piven either way but I really wanted it to be either RW or NPH.
I didn't even notice Kristen Bell there last night, I must've been checking my email or something. I actually liked her dress - much better than what she usually has on - and I suspect she was asked to sit in the front row because HP was presenting. There are seat fillers employed at many of these award shows to make sure that no seats are empty, especially in the front row. Of course, since I didn't even notice her in the first place, I don't know if she stayed there or they swapped seats.
She is still a total camera whore, though.*grin*
And I totally meant to respond to your comment, but got busy and it slipped my mind. No worries on the JD/EN icon, whenever you get some free time is fine. Thanks!
Exactly. It's entertaining, and they have some really good people on it, but the writing is so stilted sometimes it's hard to get past. FNL was on another level entirely. I was shocked it didn't get nominated, actually. Not because I expect the Academy to appreciate quality on its own merit (I'm not at all naive, lol), but because it's right up their alley: a family show in the best sense of the word, uplifting, well-written, well-acted, ambitious, and on a big network. Bizarre to me that they would not notice it. Sigh.
You are probably right about "30 Rock." I just haven't watched it enough, not as much as I did "The Office." What I did watch was funny. I like Tina Fey a lot, and Alec Baldwin is always good at comedy (I personally think he's better at it than a serious drama). It simply didn't grab me enough to follow it, but that's a personal thing. I do see the quality.
And yeah, the fact that Connie didn't even get the nod was a mystery. Sallie Field is a big name. They tend to give these things to people who already have a lot of hardware, more likely than not (though why they don't want to spread the wealth is another mystery).
There are many mysteries, in fact. "Extras" didn't get nominated but "Two and a Half Men" did? Why wouldn't the Academy create the "Dramedy" category already? They have more and more shows every year that are clearly not a straight-out drama, but not a sitcom, either. "Desperate Housewives," "Ugly Betty," I'd put "Boston Legal" in there if they simply must nominate it every year (that way maybe FNL can get a spot in the drama.). "Entourage," too. "Gilmore Girls" would have owned the category in its heyday (admittedly that was 3 years ago, but they are still a good example).
JP vs. JF. I guess it's personal. I do know that JP had a tough job. Playing a stereotype to the hilt and making it funny in a fresh way is hard. I'm just more of a fan of subtle undercurrents and slight nuances. JF is great at that. She can make a funny by lifting an eyebrow a fraction of an inch. LOL.
T.R. Knight would have been a much better choice, certainly. As would Rainn Wilson and NPH. Jeremy Piven did a fine job, but not a better one than either of these two guys.
KB sat upfront because, apparently, she came with Masi Oka. As his date. Probably a friend-date (I have no idea), but she arrived with him. And sat in the front row. With HP and Ali Larter seated in the second one behind her. I don't think it had to do with HP presenting. It was more like "Masi Oka plus one" reserved seating, and she was "plus one."
The icons are coming! I really like making them. :))
Friday Night Lights- I'm still shocked that Kyle C. nor Connie B. was not even nominated. They were the heart of the show and pulled in some powerful performances.
I'm so pissed with all the attention given to K.Bell. She is not even a regular on the show and she is already at all the events, etc. Couldn't she joined a show I didn't watch?
Yeah, every year I am reminded that these are not "Excellence in Television Programming" awards. More like "Relative Excellence In Certain Networks and Paid Channels Provided You Gathered Either Enough Ratings, Critical Praise, or Have Big Names In Front or Behind the Camera Programming" Awards.
In the light of which I am also still shocked they completely dropped FNL. It is normally what Academy would like: it's a family drama (and not in a corny "after-school special" or patronizing "7th Heaven" kind of way), it has both writing and acting that's worthy of consideration, it's on a big network, and while it didn't get big numbers, it's critically acclaimed. I especially feel sad that Connie wasn't recognized. And Kyle, too, for that matter. He surprised me. I have watched him in numerous shows for years, and he is completely different here. That's acting!
Couldn't she joined a show I didn't watch?
Personally, I would love her to join a show nobody watches, but that's too much to ask, I understand. LOL. The really annoying travesty is her hanging all over the cast and dragging after them everywhere on their "accolades collecting" rounds. Hey, Kristen! News flash: those are not your accolades! You weren't on the show last year. Oh, well. Nothing we can do about this one. For some reason they seem to let her. Here's to hoping she alienates them soon enough. LOL. Sadly, though, I am not holding my breath. Her MO is to be super-nice to those who can further her career. She only alienates those she considers beneath her. Which is pretty much anyone who isn't famous enough or whom she thinks she's outgrown.
Did you watch Kyle is 'Early Edition'? I remember watching that show but I have no idea how it ends!
Like you, I highly doubt that Kristen is going to alienate any one on Heroes. From the pictures/interviews it seems like the cast adores her, although it seems like she doesn't have any pictures with Ali L. or Jack C. yet. The sad thing is that with all these new cast members added on to an already large ensemble cast I wonder about the success of Heroes next year.
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
I know! They just hang off of her and I'm surprised she doesn't trip with how much fabric pools at her feet. She has really only dressed well a hand-full of times. It is bad when you are a regular on "Go Fug Yourself".
And OMG! That dress! What ... who ... I have no words! LOL. It's beyond bad. It looks like she stole it off Gina Davis or something. Except Gina Davis probably wouldn't be caught dead in something this ugly. Is that a broche on the front? My eyes hurt. As someone once said, those outfits of hers are proof positive that Kristen Bell has no friends. Or someone somewhere would have stopped her and made her go change before she left the house looking like that. :) Thank you for the links! The exhibits are hysterical.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ulI1ioVfNsY
There are hardly words.
Does she not realize how ridiculous she looks? And is it me, or are the Heroes people just laughing at her at this point?
*Head Meet Desk*
Thank you for the morning laugh!
KB makes it so easy! It's as if she wanted us to mock her. :))
What worries me is this: if Brothers & Sisters stays on the air (and I do watch it), my fear is that the academy will ALWAYS pick Sally b/c she's a "name" and no one else will get a chance. You know?
RE: KB seating arrangement. I mentioned this on another LJ, too. That freaked me out--not that she was with them b/c David Anders said that they were "told" to sit w/the cast b/c they're now a part of it, but WHY is she sitting in front? Was she seated there b/c she's a cast member AND Sylar's "date"? I'd be pissed if I were Hayden P.
Oh, man, me too! There's something about her little girl demeanor that's just creepy in a woman her age! *Shudders.* :) And you are right about SF. The Academy tends to do that: pick a "name" or what they consider a "sure bet" and give them one every years. Sigh.
Re: KB. 1. David Anders may very well sit with the cast because he is a part of it now. He is going to be a regular. Ditto for the two minority women who weren't even photographed (though they were there). As to KB, she is, at best, a "recurring." She is not a regular cast. Yet you can't click on a picture of the cast anywhere these days without seeing her front and center. She is friends with Zackary Quinto (Sylar), and she is with the same agency as Hayden. They knew each other before. Which is how she got the guest part. Didn't even have to audition.
The thing is, she is acting and talking as if she is going to be THE star of that show. I got to tell you, Heroes fandom is not amused. She is widely hated already and she hasn't even been on screen yet.
As to why she set upfront? She wasn't there with Zackary as his date (though they appear everywhere together these days. But it's the worst kept secret in Hollywood: ZQ is strongly rumored to be gay.). She was there as the date of ... wait for it ... Masi Oka! That's right. That's why the front and center: he was nominated and had the seat in the front row. His date got to sit next to him. She clung to the guy on the red carpet, jumped in on all the interviews (other new cast members -- full cast members, not guest or recurring ones -- stayed a bit away, letting the nominated guys shine and receive the accolates they won in the previous season. That was such a glaring contrast with KB's behavior. Sigh.), but come party time, she was gluded to ZQ again. I'm guessing the "date" part included no actual dating. Fine, whatever, be a beard to a bigger name if you like, but she put herself forward so much, it caused quite an uproar. Oh, and she broke Adrian Pasdar's camera. Because she was mugging for it so much. LOL.
